Safety Planning

A protective order is just one piece of the puzzle. Beyond the courtroom, we help you craft a personalized safety plan that may include secure housing, financial resources, counseling, and other supportive services to ensure your well-being on every level.

What is a protective order?

A protective order, sometimes called a restraining order, is a legal document issued by a court to help safeguard an individual from threats, harassment, or abuse. In the context of domestic violence or stalking, a protective order typically restricts an abuser or harasser from contacting or approaching the person who sought protection. It can also set limits on proximity to the protected person’s home, workplace, or school.

Court Advocacy

One of the most unique aspects of our agency is our Community-Based Rape Crisis Center. Unlike many places where survivors must go to a hospital for a forensic exam, we offer a dedicated, trauma-informed space where trained professionals perform these exams. We welcome and serve individuals 13 and older for sexual assault forensic exams. This environment is designed to be more comforting and less clinical, helping survivors feel safer and more in control.

What is a Protective Order?

A protective order—sometimes called a “restraining order”—is a legal document issued by a court to help protect individuals from being harassed, threatened, or abused. In Oklahoma, protective orders can:

  • Prohibit contact from the offending individual.
  • Require the offender to stay away from the survivor’s home, work, or school.
  • Provide various other safeguards, depending on each unique situation.

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), thousands of protective orders are filed each year in our state, underscoring how commonly they are used to help address domestic violence, sexual violence, and stalking. In 2020 alone, more than 28,000 protective orders were issued in Oklahoma [1].

Why Having an Advocate Matters
  • Reduced Stress and Confusion: The legal system often has its own language and protocols. Having an advocate translate legal jargon and outline next steps can help you feel more confident.
  • Emotional Support: Clients report feeling less isolated and more hopeful when they have someone physically and emotionally present during court proceedings.
  • Connection to Resources: Our advocates can direct you to community resources such as counseling, emergency shelters, children’s services, and more. If you need legal representation, we can refer you to Legal Aid or other reputable legal services.
  • Empowerment: Knowing your rights and understanding the process can shift the balance of power back to you, an essential step toward healing and future well-being.
